GROUP GOALS, SOCIAL INTERDEPENDENCE, and TRUST

GROUP GOALS, SOCIAL INTERDEPENDENCE, and TRUST
Basic Concepts to Be Covered in This Chapter
In this chapter a number of concepts are defined and discussed. The major ones are listed below. Divide into heterogeneous pairs. Each pais is to (a) define each concept, noting the page on which it is defined and discussed, and (b) ensure thatboth members of the pair understand the meaning of each concept. Then combine into groups of four. Compare the answers of the two pairs. If there is disagreement, look up the concept in the chapter and clarify it until all the members agree on and understand the definition.

Introduction
The honor of one is the honor of all.
The hurt of one is the hurt of all.
Creek Indian Creed
Groups form for a cooperative purpose. Since our beginnings, humans have joined together to cooperate to achieve goals that eachindividual member could not achieve alone. Where as elephants have size and cheetahs have speed, it is our ability to engange in cooperative enterprises to achieve group goals that distinguishes us as a species. Social interdependence defines the ways in which the goals of individuals are related. Social interdependence is the heart of all human interaction, and cooperation is the heart of all small group efforts. To be effective, groups must set group goals that all members commit them selves to cooperate in achieving. There are two steps to do so:
1.    Operational goals and the paths to achieving the goals are clearly specified and measurable.
2.    Cooperative interdependence is structured among group members.
Exercise 3.1: Orientations Toward Social Interdependence
This exercise has two purpose: (1) to make you more aware of your orientation towards goal interdependence with others and (2) to make your group more aware of members orientations toward social interdependence. The procedure is as follows:
1.    Working by yourself, complete the following questionnaire.
2.    Using the scoring table that follows the questionnaire, determine your score and then determine the group average for each scale.
3.    Have a group discussion concerning the orientations toward social interdependence of group members.

Exercise 3.2: Are Group Goals Necessary?
There has been some controversy over whether group goals are necessary. The purpose of this exercise is to structure a critical discussion of the issue. The procedur is as follows.
1.    Assigment of Positions: the class froms groups of four. Each group is ultimately to write a report summarizing its position on whether:
a.       Groups cannot function without goals.
b.      Group goals are of no use.
The report is to contain the group’s overall conclusions and the facts and rationale supporting its position. The supporting facts and rationale may be obtained from this chapter the entire book, and outside reading.
2.    Preparation Pairs: Each group divides into pairs. One pair is assigned the position that groups cannot function without goals and the other pair the position that group goals are of no use. The pairs review the supporting sections of this chapter, the procedure for the exercise, and the guidelines for constructive controversy(pp. 330). Each pair prepares a persuasif “base case” rationale for its assigned position that includes as many facts and research findings as possible. Ten minutes are allowed for this phase.
3.    Presentation: one member of each pair changes chairs. A “group goals are neces sary” person should be seated with a “group goal are unnecessary” person. The “group goals are necessary” person has up to three minutes to present the best case possible for the position, being as forceful and persuasive possible. The “group goals are unneccesary” person takes notes and asks for clarification of anything that is not fully understood. The “group goals unnecessary” person then parent.
4.    Open discision (refute and Rebut): There is an open discussion of whether or not group goals are necessary. Each side presents as many facts and research findings as it can to support support its point of view. Members listen criticallyto the opposing position and ask for supporting facts for any conclusions made by the opponent. Participants should ensure that all the facts supporting both sides are brought out and discussed. The guidelines for constructive controversy should be followed. About ten minutes are allowed forthis phase.
5.    Perspective Reversal: members of each pair change chairs. The “group goals are necessary” person presents in three minutes the best case possible for the “group goals areunnecessary” position. He or she should be as forceful and persuasive as her or she can and add new arguments or facts if possible. The “group goals are unnecessary” person then similarly presents the best case possible for the “group goals are necessary” position.
6.    Synthesis and Integration: participants drop all advocacy and come to their best reasoned judgment as to whether group goals are necessary. The pair of members summarize the information and arguments for each position and come to an agreement. Each pair prepares a short presentation on its conclusions, each group may need to explain the validity of its position to the class. About ten minutes are allowed for this phase.
7.    Whole Class Discussion: the coordinator samples the decisions made by the groups of four by having several of them present their position to the class. The class the discusses similarities and differences among the positions and the coordinator summarizes what the participants have learned about group goals.
BRIEFING SHEET: GROUPS CANNOT FUNCTION WITHOUT GOALS
Your position is that a group cannot function without having at least one goal that is understood and accepted by several of its members. To support your position, use the rationale given below, any material fromn this chapter that is applicable, and your outside reading.
Group goals guide the actions of members and allow them to plan and coordinate the behavior of group members. Groups cannot exist unless the activities of their members are directed towards achieving something (a goal). It is the power of goals to influence members to engage in needed behaviors that makes goals essential to an effective group. All in all, groups cannot function effectively or even exist without goals.
BRIEFING SHEET: GROUP GOALS ARE OF NO USE
Your position is that a goal is not useful to a group and is a concept that has no basis in reality. To support your position, use the rationale given below, any material from this chapter that is applicable, and your outside reading.
Group goals are often stated in such vague terms that they could not possibly be effective guides for the actions of members. When asked, many group members cannot accurately describe the group’s goals and thus the goals can have no impact on these persons.often goals do not determine members’ efforts because the goals seem unrelated to what group members actually do. Appraisals of group process, moreover, usually reveal that groups have not achieved their goals, which suggests that the goals are not the true motivators of members’ actions. It may even be that groups do not try to accomplish anything; they just exist. All in all, goals are of no use to a group.
Why Goals Are Important
1.    Goals are guldes for action. They direct, channel, and determine what members and teachersdo.
2.    Goals motivate behavior. Goals are motivators and energizers. No goals, no motivation.
3.    Goals provide the basis for resolving conflicts. Conflicts among group members are resolved on the basis of what members want to accomplish.
4.    Goals are a prerequisite for assessmentand evaluation. Without knowing what the purpose of the activity is, no assessment can be conducted.
WHAT IS A GOAL?
No wind favors him who has no destined port.
Montaigne
On September 17, 1868, Major George A. Forsyth and fifty handpicked scouts were camped on Beecher’s Island (a small island in the dry bed of the Arikaree River) in eastem Colorado Territory. Full-scale war had just erupted with the Indian tribes of the Great Plains. Forsyth and his scouts had left Fort Hays in Kansas to find the enemy, but the Native Americans found Forsyth first. On that morning, the Cheyenne war chief known as Roman Nose led over seven hundred Cheyenne and Oglala warriors in a dawn attack on Forsyth’s camp. Many of Forsyth’s men and all his horses were killed or wounded. Forsyth was shot in both legs and a bullet creased his skull. They were trapped on the island. By September 25, as a result of stealthy sniping and repeated charges, half of Forsyth’s men were casualties. Wondering whether he would live to see another morning, forsyth lay stretched out beside the rotting carcass of his dead horse. A horrific stench rose from the dead men and animals all around him. The overall goal of Forsyth and his scouts was to survive. They did have, however, a number of short-term goals. They had to construct a barrier to protectthem from enemy fire. They used the dead horses. Maintaining group unity and supportwas essential for morale, hope, and an effective defense. Water, shelter, food, and caring for the woundedwere problems.luckily, the weather was mild enough that shelter was not a necessity. They had enough water on the island to survive. After several days, however, the scouts began to eat their horses’ decaying flesh.
The situation seemed hopeless. Suddenly, the indians withdrew. Puzzled, the survivorssoon saw why. A company of cavalry was galloping toward the island. Unknown to forsyth, two of his scoutshad slipped throughthe besieging Indians and traveled to fort Wallace in Kansas. Captain Louis H. Carpenter, a Civil War comrade of Forsyth’s, immediately mounted a company of cavalry for a rescue expedition. Carpenter’s troopers were officially known as company H of the 10th Calvary, but to their Indian foes they were the “buffalo soldiers”. Rather then fight these soldiers, Roman Nose decided to withdraw. Over the courseof three decades, the buffalo soldiers gained a reputation of being the most professional, experienced, and effecteive troops on the frontier.
Groups exist for a reason. People join groups in order to achieve goals they are unable to achieve by themselves. The goal may be to build a better mousetrap, to climb a mountain, to get the most pay for the least amount of work, or to apply the material being presented in this book. The essence of a goal is that it is in ideal. It is a desiredplace towards which people are working, a state of affairs that people value. The goals of individuals are related throught social interdependence. There may be a positive correlation among individuals’ goal attainment (i.e., cooperation), a negative correlation among individuals’ goal attainments (i.e., competition), or no correlation among individuals’ goal attainments (i.e., individualistic effoets). Such goal structures specify the type of social interdependence among individuals will interact with each other. Social interdependence is discussed in depth in a later section of this chapter. When a positive correlation exists among individuals’ goal attainments, a group goal results. A group goal is a future state of affairs desired by enough members of a group to motivate the group to work towards its achievement. Ever since there were two humans on earth, we have joined together to achieve mutual goals and to maximize our joint welfare.
A Joint Vision
Goals are not intellectual, cold, or analytical. Goals enlist the emotions of group members and point them towards coordinated efforts. The more the goal elicits emotions the more it is a vision. Group members share a vision as to what they can accomplish when they work together. A vision is an ideal and unique image of the future. The vision clarifies the mission and goals of the group. Stephen Wozniak and Stephen Jobs shared a vision as they inveted the Apple computer in a garage. They took their dream from a garage to a multinational computer company. To end world hunger, to prevent then pain and anguish of children dying of cancer, to allow the deaf to hear with an artificial ear, to allow people to live with an artificial heart, to find a drug to prevent the body’s rejection of transplanted organs-all are visions that bring tears, laughter, bitter disappointment, determination, hope, depression, enthusiasm, and joy. The vision tells group members what is uniquely possible if all work together for a common purpose. It shows members how their values and interests will be served by the accomplishments they are striving for. The goals of the group create a compelling vision that focuses the pasion of members and ignites the flame of inspired work. The vision binds members through a shared, emotional commitment. ‘Group goals breathe life into group members’ hopes and dreams and enable them to see the exciting possibilities of their joint efforts’.
Do Group Goals Exist?
Do group have goals? Or are there only the various individual goals of the group’s members? As dry as these questions may seem, social psychologists have hotly debated this issue for decades. Emmy Pepitone (1980), for example, insists that group goals can be identified, that they function as an important source of members interdependence in groups, and that they denote a common, central focus that is present most of the time and is readily identifiable as an objective reality. She states that group goals provide an aspect of unity, of a common fate, that one cannot readily convey simply by noting the individual goals of group members. Lewin (1944) said that there are situations in which group members do seem to act to maximize joint outcomes or accomplish group goals rather than to maximize their individual outcomes or achieve their individual goals. Both Horwitz (1954) and Pepitone (1952) conducted studies that indicated that group members become motivated to heve their group achieve its goal and are personally satisfied whenthe group does so. The success of the group, rather than their personal gain, seems to be the major source of their satisfaction. More recent studies indicate that group goals, comperad with individual goals, result in higher group performance, greater goal acceptance, and more cooperation among group members. Numerous other studies have demonstrated that individuals do focus on joint outcomes rather than individual outcomes when they are placed in situations requiring cooperation with others.
Many social scientists, however, believe that a group goal is a combination of the individual goals of all group membership. Each person brings to the group a wish to satisfy personal goals. These goals are not always clearly known to the member---he or she may be completely aware, partially aware, or totally unaware of his or her goals and motives during a group meeting.
There is no definitive answer to whether group goals exist in and of themselves or are simply a reflection of the overlap among the personal goals of the groupo’s members. It is safe to conclude, however, that both group and individual goals exist, and the group goals must be relevant to the individual needs of the members. Group members try usually to achieve both individual and group goals, anf the degree to which they can accomplish this through the same activities determines how effective the group will be in attaining its goals. The situation is furthercomplicated by the fact that most groups and individuals have several goals and different members value different goals at different times and even the same member places  different values on the same goal at different times.
Whether group goals are entities in and of themselves or simply a combination of the individual goals members, they are important for numerous reasons.
Exercise 3.3: Your Goal-Related Behavior
This exercise examines goal-related behavior in problem-solving groups. Working by your self, answer the following three questions. Bβ honest. Check as many responses to each question as are characteristic of your usual behavior. Then from a triad with two of your classmates, and discuss your answers and why you answered them as you did. Develop as much awareness of your behavior in goal-releated situations as possible.
1.    When I am a member of a group that does not seem to have a clear awareness of what its goals are or how they are to be achieved, I usually:
Feel disinterested and refuse to attend meetings.
Ask the designated leader to stop messing around and tell the group what it is supposed to be doing.
Ignore the situation and be extra nice to the other members.
(Take over the conversation and tell the other group members what the group’s goals are). Purpose that members review the group’s goals and in return they will be told what to do to achieve the goals.
Initiate a group discussion to clarify each member’s understanding of the group goals until all group members clearly understand what they are and what actions the group needs to take to accomplishthem.
2.    When a member of a group that has a clear understanding of its goals but seems to have little commitment to accomplishing them, I usually:
Refuse to have anything to do with the other member and avoid him or her.
Make fun of the other group member until he or she becomes more committed.
Pretend that there is nothing wrong and be nice to the other person.
Propose a compromise in which the person works harder and the group expects less.
Initiate a group discussion in which, the group goals are considered and reformulated to make them more relevant to each member’s goals.
3.    When I am a member of a group that has conflicting opinions on what its goals should be, or that has members with conflicting needs and motives, I usually:
Simply withdraw and wait for them to work out their differences.
Tell the leader to decide who is right and who is wrong and tell the losers to shut up.
Try to smooth over the differences and ask everyone to be nice and keep their differences to themselves.
Propose a 50/50 compromise where everyone gets half of what he or she wants.
Figure out how much cooperative and competitive behavior exist in the group and give the group feedback based on my observations in an attempt to increase cooperativeness among its members.
Start a group discussion on the different positions, goals, and motives of group members and seek a solution that is acceptable to everyone.
START WITH GOALS
If a man does not know to which port he is sailing, no wind is favorable
Seneca
There are two aspects of ensuring member comitment to the group’s goals. The first is to ensure that the goals meet teh START criteria (see table 3.1). To be effective, goals need to be specific (so it is clear what needs to be done next), measurable (so progress can be tracked), challenging but achievable, relevant, and aimed at competencies that will be transferred to other situations. The second way to ensure member commitment is to involve group members in the process of forming the goals.when group members participate in setting goals, there tends to be a better match between the group goals and the motives of members and a better understanding of the actions needed to achieve the goals. In addition, involvement leads to ownership of the goals, which leads to commitment. While indifferent to others’ goals, individuals seeek out opportunities to achieve their own goals and commit considerable energy to doing so. Other factors influencing commitment are how desirable the goals seems (the benefits group members will receive if the goal is accomplished) and the ways in which members will relate to each other in working toward the accomplishment of the goal (some ways of relating are more fun and involving than others).

2. Saling ketergantungan Koperasi terstruktur antara anggota kelompok.
Latihan 3.1: Orientasi Menuju Interdependensi Sosial

Latihan 3.2: Apakah Tujuan Grup Diperlukan?
a. Grup tidak bisa berfungsi tanpa gol.
The "tujuan kelompok adalah
The "tujuan kelompok tidak perlu" orang maka induk.

APAKAH TUJUAN A?
Montaigne
Setelah beberapa hari, namun, para pengintai mulai makan daging membusuk kuda mereka.
Situasi itu tampaknya takkan. Tiba-tiba, indians mundur. Bingung, survivorssoon melihat mengapa. Sebuah perusahaan kavaleri itu berderap menuju pulau itu. Tanpa diketahui Forsyth, dua
Apakah Gol Grup Ada?
Apakah kelompok memiliki tujuan?
